Carran Turlough in Winter
As the rainfails the incumbent river, the Castletown river, overflows and becomes the Carran Turlough. As the rains subside, the porous limestone rock absorbs the excess water and the ‘lake’ disappears. How cool is that??!!!
Carran Turlough in Summer
Carran is home to Europes largest ‘vanishing’ lake, more commonly known as a turlough. The lake appears and disappear depending on the level of rainfall, and is home to a rich biodiversity of ferns, ancient forest and plants.
